Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use India’s “extensive contacts” with various parties to help move them away from war and bloodshed and back towards dialogue and agreement, according to the Iranian readout of their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Kyrgyzstan.
The Iranian president, according to the readout, thanked New Delhi for its support and cooperation with Tehran during the recent war and called for intensified diplomatic efforts to establish peace and security in the region.
“India has an important position and capacities in the region and the world,” Pezeshkian said, according to the Iranian readout, urging Modi to use India’s extensive contacts with various parties to help them move away from the path of war and bloodshed and return to dialogue and agreement.
“The President further referred to India’s important position and capacities in the region and the world, as well as the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations, and asked the Indian Prime Minister to use India’s extensive contacts with various parties to help them move away from the path of war and bloodshed and return to the path of dialogue and agreement.”
The remarks came as Pezeshkian criticised the United States over its approach to the conflict, saying Washington had chosen “the path of war, insecurity and imposing their will through force” instead of diplomatic mechanisms.
Pezeshkian said Iran had never welcomed war and that its responsibility was to protect its people from danger and insecurity while creating conditions for peace and security.
He also said Tehran had remained committed to obligations undertaken under agreements, but alleged that the US had failed to fulfil its commitments.
“The continuation of war is in the interest neither of us, nor of the region, nor of humanity,” Pezeshkian said, according to the Iranian readout.
The Iranian president further said that “groups within the United States” viewed the continuation of war as serving their interests and sought to perpetuate conflicts. He argued that efforts should instead focus on strengthening those committed to peace, stability and security.
Pezeshkian said the solution to the issues facing the region lay in dialogue and cooperation, adding that all available capacities should be mobilised to prevent the spread of insecurity and conflict.
The meeting between Modi and Pezeshkian took place on the sidelines of the SCO summit and the SCO Plus meeting in Kyrgyzstan. The Indian readout of the talks also highlighted discussions on regional and global developments.
