The Strait of Hormuz reopened on Friday after remaining shut for 47 days, marking a key development in easing regional tensions. Announcing the move, Donald Trump said the vital shipping route is now “completely open and ready for business and full passage.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump added that restrictions would continue only in relation to Iran. He said the blockade “will remain in full force and effect as it pertains to Iran, only, until such time as our transaction with Iran is 100% complete.”
Peace Deal ‘Very Close’
Trump also indicated that negotiations with Iran are nearing a breakthrough. Speaking to AFP, he said there were “no sticking points” left and that a deal was “very close.”
“We’re very close. Looks like it’s going to be very good for everybody. And we’re very close to having a deal,” Trump said during a brief phone call from Las Vegas.
He also expressed confidence about the situation in the region, adding, “The strait’s going to be open, they already are open. And things are going very well.”
Talks And Key Conditions
Earlier rounds of talks between the US and Iran, held in Pakistan last weekend, ended without a final agreement. However, Trump suggested that another round of discussions could take place soon.
The US has maintained that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. Trump said Iran has agreed to hand over its stock of enriched uranium, which remains a key demand in the negotiations.
When asked about any remaining hurdles, Trump replied, “No sticking points at all.” He added that a formal, written agreement is needed before officially declaring a deal.
