US-Iran War Live Updates Today: Senior negotiators from the United States and Iran concluded on Monday what mediators Qatar and Pakistan described as “encouraging progress” made in the peace talks to end the war in West Asia.
The mediation effort in Switzerland, which kicked off Sunday, did witness some disturbance, but it also led to some agreements between Washington and Tehran.
Accompanied by officials from mediators Qatar and Pakistan, Iran and the U.S. agreed to create a “de-confliction cell” to address the fighting in Lebanon. A senior U.S. diplomat said progress was made on multiple fronts, including the establishment of “mechanisms” to ensure the key Strait of Hormuz remains open and that a ceasefire in Lebanon is upheld.
‘Insulting Messages By President Trump’
The talks between the U.S. and Iran saw brief disturbances by statements from U.S. President Donald Trump, who from thousands of miles away from the Swiss land continued firing salvos that did not sit well with the Iranians.
According to Iranian state media, talks had paused after the “publication of an insulting message by the US President.” The Iranian officials then met with Qatari mediators and left the venue, state media reported.
On Monday, according to the Iranian media, the negotiators left the summit venue to reach Zurich Airport to fly back to Tehran.
Trump Threatens Iran
U.S. President Trump on Tuesday threatened Iran that Washington would response if Tehran “doesn’t live up to their agreement”.
“If Iran doesn’t live up to their agreement, or if they’re not behaving, I will do what I have to do,” Trump told reporters when asked about the future of the agreement reached between the two countries.
