US and Iran hold indirect talks via drafts to avert renewed conflict, but mistrust and disputes over Irans highly enriched uranium and sanctions leave a final deal uncertain.

The United States and Iran are engaged in intense indirect negotiations to draft a final agreement, according to a report, as both sides attempt to prevent renewed conflict despite continuing disagreements over Tehran’s nuclear programme.
The New York Times reported that messages and draft texts are being exchanged between Washington and Tehran, with discussions focused on building a framework for a possible deal. The talks remain indirect, reflecting persistent mistrust between the two countries.
The negotiations are taking place amid a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, with uncertainty continuing over whether diplomatic efforts can succeed or if tensions could escalate again.
One of the biggest sticking points remains Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Reports suggest Tehran has hardened its position and is unwilling to send near-weapons-grade uranium abroad — a key demand reportedly pushed by the US.
US President Donald Trump recently reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to retain enriched uranium capable of supporting weapons development.
“We will get it… we’re not going to let them have it,” Trump said while discussing Iran’s nuclear programme, according to earlier reports.
Iranian officials, meanwhile, remain deeply suspicious of US intentions. According to Reuters and other reports, senior figures in Tehran fear the current pause in hostilities could be used by Washington to regroup before resuming military operations.
Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said recent “obvious and hidden moves by the enemy” suggested the US may be preparing future attacks, underlining the lack of trust shaping the talks.
Despite these tensions, both countries appear to be exploring avenues for a broader understanding that could address issues including nuclear restrictions, sanctions relief and regional security concerns, though major differences remain unresolved.
Analysts say progress toward a final agreement remains uncertain, with disputes over uranium enrichment, sanctions and security guarantees continuing to complicate negotiations.
