The United States is deploying a third aircraft carrier to the Middle East along with an additional 9,000 to 10,000 troops, following US President Donald Trump’s warning that Iran could face fresh strikes after the November 3 midterm elections.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group, carrying the additional service members, are expected to reach the Middle East by the end of November. Two other US aircraft carriers are already stationed in the region — the USS George HW Bush and the USS George Washington.
The USS George Washington is generally deployed in the Pacific Ocean but has moved to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln following its extended deployment.
The latest deployment would take the number of US sailors and Marines in the region to more than 20,000, along with hundreds of aircraft.
Trump Turns Down Tehran’s Proposal
Trump has rejected a peace proposal from Iran that was announced by Tehran last week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Iran said the proposal had been conveyed to the US through Qatari mediators.
“They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they’re losing so badly,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Trump Raises Iran Link To flydubai Attack
Trump also suggested on Wednesday that Iran could be linked to the co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain and attempting to crash an Israel-bound flight.
Asked whether there was a connection between the pilot who attacked the captain and Iran, Trump said, “I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now.”
When asked whether the US would retaliate against Iran if it was responsible for the attack, Trump replied, “Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry.”
The reporter then asked whether the man could have been placed on the plane by the IRGC or radicalised before attempting to bring down the aircraft. “Could have been, yeah,” Trump replied.
There has been no official evidence of Iranian involvement so far.
