A man in Uttar Pradesh’s Mirzapur allegedly strangled his mother, who was trying to stop him from beating his wife, police said on Monday.
Additional Superintendent of Police Nitish Singh said that the accused was arrested after the incident around 10.00 pm on Sunday.
According to the police, the accused identified as Ramsurat Bind, allegedly returned home drunk and started beating his wife Sunita Devi and abusing members of the family in Baghera Kalan village.
When his mother, Chamelia Devi (65), tried to intervene, Ramsurat allegedly assaulted and strangled her, causing her to lose consciousness. Her family rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival, news agency PTI quoted the police as saying.
Based on a complaint filed by Rammurat Bind, another son of Chamelia Devi, a case was registered at Jigna police station against Ramsurat and he was arrested on Sunday, the police said.
The body of the woman has been sent for post-mortem, they added.
In a separate incident, a 35-year-old woman, who had been reported missing, was discovered murdered and buried inside a private banana field in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, police said.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old farm owner, Mohan Kumar, with whom she was believed to have been in a relationship, was arrested.
The body was recovered from a three-foot pit on farmland near Gobichettipalayam. The murder came to light after locals, who had entered the plantation to collect mushrooms after a spell of rain on Friday, noticed a bloodstained knife and strands of hair sticking out of the soil and alerted authorities.
The victim was identified as Sonia, a beautician from Appakudal. When she failed to return home from work, her family filed a missing-person complaint. Sonia, who lost her husband two years ago, lived with her mother and her two school-going children.
