A politician from UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s Labour Party on Tuesday threatened those who refuse to go to war with Russia with arrest and said the British would rise against Russia in the event of a war.
The remarks came as Ukraine and Russia exchanged deadly drone and air strikes over the past week. Earlier this week, the UK told the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) that “Russia’s campaign against Ukraine is not only an assault on Ukrainian sovereignty. It is a direct challenge to European security.”
Speaking during a panel discussion hosted by Sky News, Labour leader Paul Richards said: “The British will rise to greatness against Russia. We would have to lock a few people up… pro-Russian voices, people who say there isn’t a threat, don’t fight for your country, that don’t go to war for Burnham.”
In a video shared by X user @ben_toto23, Richards can also be heard suggesting that conscription could be on the table.
Russia-Ukraine Strikes
The remarks came as Russia and Ukraine continued to trade long-range strikes.
Russian strikes killed at least four people in Dnipro in eastern Ukraine, local authorities said on Tuesday, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in New York to plead Ukraine’s case at the United Nations.
For months, Russia and Ukraine have been engaged in intensifying long-range strikes targeting a growing number of civilian sites, including factories, warehouses and energy and port infrastructure, as well as ships in the Black Sea.
“The Russian attack carried out last night against the city left four dead,” Dnipropetrovsk regional governor Oleksandr Ganzha said on social media.
The victims were found under the rubble, while search and rescue operations were under way.
