A massive wave of drone attacks struck Moscow and the surrounding region overnight into Sunday, killing at least two people.
The drone barrage also caused damage to a major oil refinery, Russian officials said as the country entered the final day of parliamentary voting.
Videos Capture Drone Attack Impact
Several clips capturing the massive drone attacks in Moscow have surfaced on X. One of the videos shows a projectile striking the ground near a building. The footage was captured by a person inside the building.
Pro-Ukrainian OCINT account Exilenova+ shared footage of the drone attack on X. CNN-News18 could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said more than 1,600 drones had been intercepted, including around 450 that were heading towards the capital. He accused Ukraine of seeking to disrupt the tightly controlled election, which is expected to further consolidate Russian President Vladimir Putin’s long-standing hold on power.
“The unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The enemy did not succeed,” Sobyanin said on Telegram.
400 Evacuated After Drone Strikes Residential Building
Moscow region Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man were killed at separate locations. A drone crash sparked a fire at a 21-storey residential building, prompting the evacuation of about 400 people, he said.
The Moscow Oil Refinery was also damaged in the attacks, according to Sobyanin. Emergency teams were deployed at the site, while no casualties were reported at the refinery.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the strikes, saying, “Our long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night.”
He tweeted, “One of Russia’s key oil industry facilities and the aggressor’s logistics facility were hit. These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine.”
Separately, Russian-backed authorities said a Ukrainian drone strike hit a bus in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region, killing two people, including an election commission member.
The attacks came amid an intensified Ukrainian campaign targeting Russian energy infrastructure. Russians began voting on Friday in the first parliamentary election since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Putin’s United Russia party is widely expected to retain power, while the election is also being watched as an indicator of domestic support for the Kremlin’s war effort.
