Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in a second consecutive UEFA Champions League final after battling to a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, sealing a dramatic 6-5 aggregate victory. The reigning champions will now face Arsenal in the final in Budapest on May 30 as they chase back-to-back European crowns.
Having edged a thrilling first leg 5-4 in Paris, PSG wasted no time in tightening their grip on the tie. Just three minutes into the contest, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia burst down the left flank before cutting the ball back for Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, who rifled home to silence the Bavarian crowd.
“It was an exceptional match, another magical night in Munich against a great team,” PSG forward Desire Doue was quoted as saying to Canal Plus. “These are the kinds of matches we’ve dreamt of playing since we were little. Now, we’re going to enjoy this as a team.”
Bayern Munich vs Paris Saint-Germain: How It Happened
Although Bayern dominated possession for long spells, PSG’s disciplined defensive structure frustrated the German side throughout the night. Michael Olise, Harry Kane and Joshua Kimmich all struggled to find their rhythm, while the hosts were left furious over a couple of contentious refereeing decisions in the first half.
PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov produced several key saves, denying Jamal Musiala before half-time, while Manuel Neuer kept Bayern alive with impressive stops from Joao Neves and Doue at the other end.
Luis Enrique’s men showed maturity in the second half, sitting deeper while remaining dangerous on the counterattack. Bayern eventually found a breakthrough in stoppage time when Kane drilled home his seventh consecutive Champions League goal, but it came too late to rescue the tie.
“The character we showed against a team like Bayern is so positive,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique, who has guided the team to back-to-back Champions League finals. “We’re so happy to reach a second Champions League final in a row. It was very intense. Very difficult. They play football at the highest level. Both teams are similar, we love to press higher. We are very happy,” he said.
