The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has restarted its Unified Member Portal after a scheduled upgrade that lasted for about a week. After this major software and database upgrade, the entire interface of the portal has changed.
Along with this, EPFO has made many changes in its member services, due to which the way of doing some important work for PF account holders will completely change.
UAN will not be activated from EPFO website
After this new upgrade, the facility of UAN activation and generating new UAN directly from the EPFO portal has been discontinued. Now both these services have been completely shifted to the government’s UMANG app.
Apart from this, now Aadhaar-based face authentication has also been made mandatory to strengthen security. EPFO says that with this change online services will become more secure, faster and reliable.
What changed on the portal? These are the 5 main things
The changes that have occurred for EPFO subscribers after the software upgrade are as follows:
- Now UAN cannot be activated through EPFO portal.
- The facility to allot (create) a new UAN directly on the website has been discontinued.
- Both UAN activation and allotment services will now run only on Umang app.
- For both these tasks, it will now be necessary to do Aadhaar-based face authentication.
- If you have forgotten your UAN, the process to recover it (Know Your UAN) has been made easier than ever.
Now UAN will be activated through Umang app.
If you are a new employee or your UAN is not activated, now you will not be able to do it from the EPFO website. For this you will have to take help of Umang App:

The method of generating new UAN number also changed
If any employee wants to generate a new UAN number, then they will also have to use the Umang app. UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) is the digital services platform of the Government of India, where services of many government departments including EPFO are available.
Process to create new UAN
- Open Umang app and go to EPFO Services.
- Click on the option of ‘UAN Allotment and Activation’.
- Complete your Aadhaar-based face authentication.
- Fill the required information and generate new UAN as per the instructions on the screen.
What to do if you have a PF account but no UAN?
Employees who already have an EPF account but have not yet been allotted UAN can also get a new number. For this they will have to verify their registered mobile number and provide member details. Once the verification is complete, a new UAN will be generated, which will be linked to their existing PF account.
If you have forgotten UAN then you can easily get it from the portal: If a subscriber has forgotten his UAN number, it is now easy to find it on the upgraded new portal. For this, the user will have to enter his registered mobile number, upload the required ID or address proof and verify the OTP received on the mobile. After this the UAN will appear on the screen.
Death claim facility will still be available on the portal
Despite shifting of UAN-related services to UMANG app, EPFO has retained the online facility to file ‘death claim’ (withdrawal of money on death of a member) on its Unified Member Portal. The nominee or beneficiary making the claim must have the following things:
- mobile number linked to aadhaar
- Bank account details and canceled check or passbook
- Death Certificate of EPF member
- Proof of age (where required)
Keep in mind: EPFO has clarified that all the documents should be in PDF format. The size of each file should be less than 2 MB and there should not be any ‘space’ in the file name.
Why were these changes made and what problems may arise at this time?
According to EPFO, this upgradation has been done to strengthen the database and modernize the software so that people can get better service. However, the organization also noted that online requests and claim settlements may take a little longer than usual during the initial two-week stabilization period (when the system is set up) as additional verification and validation checks are being carried out. Members have been advised to avoid repeated login or submitting the same request repeatedly during peak hours.
