As the US-Iran war reaches a dead end, the UAE has released several billion dollars of Iran’s frozen assets held in UAE banks, including two tonnes of gold worth $283 million, according to multiple sources in Tehran familiar with the transfers.
The reports said the move was aimed at persuading Iran to spare the UAE from future attacks amid renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran.
Assets Flown From Abu Dhabi To Iran
The aircraft travelled from Abu Dhabi to Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport and Karaj’s Payam Airport on August 11 and 12. On each occasion, it stayed for about an hour before returning.
The same aircraft had earlier flown from Abu Dhabi to Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on June 8, transferring $3 billion, according to multiple Iranian officials who spoke to Reuters in June.
The latest transfers include Iran’s frozen assets held in Emirati banks, as the UAE seeks to avoid being targeted during renewed fighting between Washington and Tehran.
UAE Allows Aircraft Sales To Iran
Alongside the release of frozen assets, the UAE government has also allowed the sale of 15 second-hand passenger aircraft to Iranian airlines.
The move is part of efforts to convince the Islamic regime in Iran to spare the UAE and avoid targeting the country during renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran.
Three Boeing 737-300/500 aircraft and two former Condor Airbus A320-212s have been sold to Iranian airlines by Emirati companies Aerovision FZ and Skysource FZ, respectively.
The two Airbus A320 aircraft have already been flown to Iran.
More Aircraft Set To Arrive
A satellite image shows the two Airbus A320-212s, identified as C9-ACE and C9-ACF, at George Enescu International Airport in Romania shortly before they were transferred to Iran with the help of the UAE government a few days ago.
According to sources in Iran, another 14 passenger aircraft are set to arrive in the country with the help of Emirati companies.
The aircraft are expected to replace more than 30 passenger aircraft that were bombed and destroyed by the United States and Israel during Operation Epic Fury and Lion’s Roar.
Claims Over UAE’s Iran Policy
While propagandists on social media have sought to portray the Emirati government as taking a tough stance against the Islamic regime of Iran, the account from sources in Tehran presents a different picture.
According to the sources, UAE government officials have continued efforts to persuade Iran not to target the country during renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States in July.
The reported release of frozen assets, including gold, and the facilitation of aircraft transfers are being described as part of those efforts to keep the UAE out of the conflict.
Key Questions Answered
