Two pilots were killed when a US Army Apache attack helicopter crashed in a field in central Texas, sparking a wildfire that forced several nearby homes to be evacuated, authorities said.
The AH-64 Apache crashed during operations near Fort Hood, officials said. Cliff Coleman, a spokesman for the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that both people on board died. Their identities have not yet been released.
Crash Investigation Underway
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Fort Hood’s criminal investigation division is leading the investigation, Coleman said.
The helicopter did not hit any homes or other structures when it came down. The crash triggered a fire in the surrounding field, with firefighters working to contain the flames. Video from the scene showed debris scattered across the field and scorched ground as firefighters tackled the remaining fire.
“You could tell it was a violent crash,” Coleman said.
“Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,” said Brig Gen Ethan Diven, acting commanding general at Fort Hood. “Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott also offered condolences, saying the state was indebted to those who serve the country.
The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine attack helicopter operated by the US Army. It is designed primarily to provide close air support and attack enemy ground targets, particularly armoured vehicles. The aircraft can carry rockets, missiles and a 30mm automatic cannon and has been widely used by the US military in combat operations.
Further details about the crash and the two pilots are expected as the investigation continues.
