After the death of two pilots due to heart attack in a week, the Pilot Association of India (ALPA) has demanded a strict stance on airlines from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The association has written a letter to DGCA asking for the medical fitness report of the pilots. Further, appealed that any proposal for relaxation in duty hours (FDTL) should be immediately rejected. Pilots said their lives were at risk due to increasing workload and fatigue.

Both pilots died of heart attack

Recently an Air India pilot died during his rest period in Bali (Indonesia). Two days later, an Akasa Air pilot died during training. In both the cases the cause was said to be heart attack.

Although both the pilots were not on duty at the time of the incident, the association argues that the pressure of continuous flights and lack of rest is taking a toll on the health of the pilots.

Questions raised on delay in implementing rules by writing letter to DGCA

ALPA India has written to DGCA chief Veer Vikram Yadav and Civil Aviation Secretary Sameer Kumar Sinha, demanding that a fixed deadline be created for full implementation of the amended ‘Flight Duty Time Limitations’ (FDTL) rules.

The association has also said that there should be a transparent system for reporting fatigue of pilots, the information of which should be made public every 3 months.

Companies are ignoring complaints of fatigue

Citing information received from RTI, the association said that the rate of acceptance of complaints related to pilot fatigue by airline operators is very low.

It has been written in the letter that this trend is against the safety culture and weakens the risk management system. Pilots say that it is not enough to just follow the regulatory limits on paper, but it is important for the pilots to be actually fit and relaxed.

What is special in the new rules and why is there a delay?

The government had changed FDTL rules to provide more rest to pilots, including increasing weekly rest hours and setting a limit on night flights.

However, many airlines have asked for more time to implement them citing operational problems. ALPA says that safety standards cannot be compromised for commercial gains.

Having new talent does not mean license to exploit

The Pilot Association said that the large number of new and young pilots in the country does not mean that airlines should use it for exploitation or to relax safety rules.

The association demanded that the medical fitness data of pilots be made public so that accountability can be fixed and such untimely deaths can be prevented in future.
