US President Donald Trump on Thursday said the killing of American troops by Iran would provide sufficient grounds for the United States to resume military action.
Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump dismissed suggestions that Iran remained capable of sustaining the conflict, pointing to the destruction inflicted by US forces.
“If they killed US Troops, it would be a good reason to do so…There is no navy, no air force, we have wiped out their leadership. Then you read in the fake news that they are doing really well in the war, this is unbelievable. They have 159 ships, and all of them lie at the bottom of the ocean. We have taken pictures of them down there.”
The remarks came a day after the US House of Representatives approved a resolution seeking to restrict Trump from taking further military action against Iran. The measure passed by a narrow margin of 215-208, with four Republicans joining Democrats in support. It will now move to the Senate.
Reacting to the vote, Trump criticised lawmakers backing the resolution and described the move as an attempt to undermine his administration during ongoing efforts to end the conflict.
In a post on Truth Social, he accused opponents of prioritising political gains over national interests and singled out the Republican lawmakers who broke ranks.
“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Democrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand. The Democrats are fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome. They would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories. The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story – They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves. MAGA!!! President DJT.”
The vote represents the first successful congressional challenge to Trump since the United States and Israel jointly launched military strikes against Iran on February 28, three months ago. Despite its passage in the House, the resolution is expected to face a presidential veto.
