US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Washington and Tehran were close to finalising a broad agreement aimed at easing regional tensions, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen as part of the proposed understanding.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement had been “largely negotiated” and that only the final details remained under discussion before a formal announcement.
“An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries, as listed,” Trump wrote, signalling what could become one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs in the region in recent years.
He added that reopening the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil shipping route that has remained at the centre of escalating tensions in the Gulf — would be among the key outcomes of the deal.
The announcement came after a series of high-level conversations involving leaders from across the Middle East and beyond, reflecting the growing international effort to stabilise the region following months of military and diplomatic strain involving Iran.
Trump said he participated in discussions from the Oval Office with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Pakistani military chief Asim Munir, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, among others.
According to Trump, the discussions centred on Iran and a wider “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.”
The US president also revealed that he had separately spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying the conversation had “gone very well” amid ongoing negotiations.
The latest developments follow months of uncertainty surrounding the Iran war, maritime security in the Gulf, and repeated concerns over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — a narrow but strategically vital waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes.
While no official timeline has been announced, Trump said the remaining aspects of the agreement would be disclosed shortly.
