US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he was “happy” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had left the United States and returned to Britain, while taking a fresh swipe at the couple’s strained relationship with the Royal Family.

Trump said he believed Harry and Meghan had shown “great disrespect” towards the royals and suggested he would not have welcomed them back if he had been in the family.

“I’m happy about it. I was not a fan,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked about the couple’s return to Britain.

“I thought they treated the royal family with great disrespect. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles.”

Trump Says He Would Not Have Taken Couple Back

Trump also said he would have taken a harder line than the Royal Family.

“Maybe I’m different. I wouldn’t have taken him back, right? If I were the royal family, I would not have taken them back,” he said.

Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals in 2020 and moved to the US after a bitter fallout with the family. Harry has since appeared to improve relations with his father, King Charles III, during recent visits to Britain.

However, he is still reported to have a strained relationship with his elder brother, Prince William, and William’s wife, Catherine.

Trump and Meghan have also exchanged criticism over the years. Meghan criticised Trump during the 2016 US presidential campaign, while Trump later hit back at her comments about him.

Harry And Meghan Return To Britain

Harry and Meghan have returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, six years after leaving the country.

The couple married in 2018 but stepped away from royal duties two years later. Their rift with the Royal Family deepened after Harry’s memoir Spare and their widely watched interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In the interview, the couple made allegations about racism within the monarchy, while Meghan also spoke about struggling with her mental health during her time as a working royal.

The couple later built a commercial life in the US through deals with major streaming and media companies.

Their return to Britain has fuelled speculation over whether they plan to stay permanently. Reports say they are settling in the Cotswolds for an extended period while keeping their homes in California and Portugal.

Meghan remains unpopular with much of the British public, while Harry also continues to face mixed public opinion.
