Well, this isn’t a futuristic concept for the distant future. It is about to become a reality in Malaysia.

Built by the local digital infrastructure firm Zetrix AI Bhd in partnership with Anwar’s political party, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), the virtual premier is slated to make its public debut shortly.
The initiative goes far beyond a mere political gimmick; it represents a major frontier in digital governance and AI adoption. As the Prime Minister’s Office succinctly framed it in a launch announcement: “No leader can be everywhere, at every moment. It’s not merely an avatar. It is a digital extension of myself. Ready to listen, assist, and serve the people.”
What Exactly Is An AI Avatar?
At its most basic level, an AI avatar is a digital stand-in for a real human, capable of interacting visually and textually with users. However, PMX AI introduces a monumental technological shift: it is built to be agentic.
What Is Agentic AI?
Standard AI chatbots are reactive—they answer questions when prompted but stop there. An agentic AI possesses autonomy. It can take a complex goal (like “help me apply for a state grant”), break it down into sequential steps, reason through problems, and independently execute the task across multiple systems without needing a human to guide it at every turn, Free Malaysia Today reported.
To achieve an authentic likeness and prevent the system from making errors, Zetrix developed a proprietary “personal knowledge” model. This framework is continuously fed the Prime Minister’s actual writings, historical policy records, and live public remarks, allowing the AI to sharpen its responses in real-time and mimic Anwar’s unique communication style.
What Can ‘PMX AI’ Actually Do?
PMX AI is built to operate as a high-utility public servant. Key capabilities include:
Colloquial Fluency: The avatar converses fluently in both English and Bahasa Malaysia. Crucially, it is programmed to understand regional dialects, local slang, and informal expressions, bridging the gap between bureaucratic language and everyday citizens.
Smart Career and Education Routing: By analysing a user’s interests, aptitude, and life circumstances through natural conversation, the AI can cross-reference national databases to provide custom career suggestions, course recommendations, and job placements.
Streamlined Public Services: Beyond chatting, the agentic framework allows users to navigate complex government procedures, complete administrative tasks like driver’s license renewals, and securely process digital payments.
The Global Context: A Growing Roster of Digital Leaders

While the efficiency gains of a digital prime minister are obvious, the project sits at a sensitive intersection of political branding and state administration.
TS Wong, group managing director of Zetrix, remains fiercely optimistic about the paradigm shift, noting that “AI will transform governance and politics.” Yet, critics and tech ethicists point out the fine line the tool must walk. Operating a synthetic version of a sitting head of state raises profound questions regarding data privacy, strict guardrails against AI hallucinations (errors), and the potential blurring of lines between public service and party campaigning ahead of Malaysia’s next general election.
If successful, PMX AI could serve as a global blueprint for hyper-personalised, automated governance. If it falters, it may serve as a cautionary tale about the unpredictability of putting words into a digital leader’s mouth.
