Earlier, a report by an organization of teachers had said that due to uncertainty regarding strict visa rules and policies, registration of international students in American colleges and universities may decrease by 1.1 lakh in Fall 2026. According to the report by NAFSA and research firm JB International, the registration of international students in Fall 2025-26 was estimated at 11.69 lakh. This year it has come down to 10.57 lakh. Foreign students contribute $41.77 billion to America In the 2024-25 academic year, more than 3.63 lakh students from India were enrolled in different courses. According to the report, international students contributed $41.77 billion to the local economy. This figure is estimated to be $38.37 billion in 2026-27. New rules for student and visitor visas: In July, the US government had informed about the new rules. Under these rules, the traditional period of status for student and visitor visas has been abolished and the period of stay has been fixed at four years. The four-year period is usually equal to the duration of an academic course.
