India’s Taniya had to settle for silver at the Youth Olympic Games after losing to China’s Zhao Min in the women’s 75kg beach wrestling final in Dakar on Saturday, November 7.

Despite the defeat, Taniya became India’s first beach wrestling medallist at the Youth Olympics.

Despite taking an early 1-0 lead, Taniya went down 1-2 to Zhao on Victory by Points (VPO). The Chinese wrestler fought back to level the score before grabbing the decisive point to bag the gold medal.

The loss brought an end to Taniya’s brilliant unbeaten run at the competition, having won all four of her bouts en route to the final.

Taniya started her campaign with a 3-1 win against Germany’s Mia Mauer in Group B, winning by technical superiority. She followed it up with an identical victory over Greece’s Vasiliki Karavanou in her second group bout at Saly Beach West.

Taniya continued her brilliant run in the knockouts, beating Estonia’s Merily Vaester 4-1 by technical superiority in the quarterfinals before defeating the United States’ Matilda Ann Hruby 3-1 in the semifinals to bag her place in the final.

Beach wrestling, a fast-paced combat sport held on sand within a seven-metre circular arena, is featuring for the first time at the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.

Each bout is limited to three minutes, with the win going to the wrestler who reaches three points or executes a decisive throw that puts their opponent on their back.

Taniya’s silver medal further boosted India’s tally at the ongoing Games, taking the nation’s overall count to seven, comprising three silver and four bronze medals.

Khushbu Rajakbhai Darjada had earlier bagged silver in the women’s 63kg judo category, while Tanvi Patri also claimed a silver medal in women’s singles badminton.

India’s bronze medal winners include swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu as well, who bagged two medals in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle events and Tirthank Pegu, who clinched third place in the men’s 200m butterfly.
