Tamil Nadu witnessed the beginning of a new political era, as Vijay took office as the Chief Minister, the first non-Dravidian government in the state after more than five decades. The actor-turned-politician contested and won two seats – Perambur and Tiruchirappalli (East) – during TVK’s blockbuster debut in the recent election.
After taking the oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay formally resigned from Trichy East, retaining Perambur as his main constituency. The dual candidacy was designed to maximise Vijay’s chances of securing a seat and expand his political influence beyond Chennai.
Why Perambur Is Important?
Perambur is a significant urban seat in Chennai and offers proximity to the centre of power. It is also one of the largest assembly segments in Chennai following the 2011 delimitation.
Capturing Perambur is a major win for Vijay, as the city has predominantly favoured the DMK, even during MG Ramachandran’s era when the AIADMK won three back-to-back terms. It took decades of groundwork for AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa to win half of the 14 seats in 2006 and nearly sweep the region in 2011, but the DMK staged a strong comeback in 2016 before reclaiming all the seats again in 2021.

Perambur also houses the iconic Integral Coach Factory (ICF), whose employees and Indian Railways staff have traditionally supported the CPI(M) and DMK, giving the area a strong history of left-leaning and Dravidian influence.
Why Did Vijay Vacate Trichy East?
While Vijay won both Perambur and Trichy East in the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, he is legally required to vacate one seat and keep only one to represent in the Assembly. According to Section 70 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, no person can be a member of two seats in a state legislature at the same time.
What Will Happen After Vijay Vacates His Seat?
The seat he vacates will immediately trigger a by-election within six months. Leaders often vacate the seat where their party has a stronger secondary candidate or where they feel they can more easily win a second time to maintain their party’s seat count.
