Jim Rowley, CEO of the US-based fitness brand Crunch Fitness, has sparked controversy by stating that work-life balance is an illusion and that employees who seek it are “not fully committed.”

His comment comes in the wake of Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s suggestion of a 90-hour workweek, which sparked widespread controversy and condemnation from various quarters across the country.

In an interview with FortuneRowley stated that true success requires sacrifice and a strong commitment to one’s goals.

“I don’t think there’s such a thing as work-life balance,” said Rowley. “I think work-life balance is for somebody who’s not fully committed. It depends on what your “why” is. If your “why” is really purposeful, and goal-oriented, you’re gonna find an imbalance in pursuit of that.”

Rowley, who has over 30 years of experience in the fitness industry, stressed that pursuing greatness often involves imbalances in personal and professional life. He believes that individuals who aim for extraordinary success must be “all in” and willing to sacrifice.

“Nobody ever had a perfect balance in pursuit of something great. You’re either all in, or you’re somewhat in, or you’re not in at all,” he added.

The 57-year-old former United States Marine challenged his teams to reconsider their motivations, stressing that wanting things like promotions or new possessions is not enough.

“But what are you willing to do to get them? And when you ask somebody what they’re willing to sacrifice, you hear crickets. People haven’t thought it through,” he noted.
