A Congress campaign convoy carrying Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and other party leaders was allegedly attacked with stones and bottles in Assam’s Nagaon on Monday, prompting the party to accuse BJP workers of targeting its leaders ahead of the Lok Sabha bypoll.
The incident took place in the Barma area of Samaguri as the Congress leaders were travelling to an election meeting in support of party candidate Sibamoni Bora. Police said BJP and Congress workers clashed during campaigning in the area.
Gogoi alleged that BJP workers attacked the vehicle in which he and Baghel were travelling, despite the police being alerted beforehand about the possibility of trouble.
“Just now, while heading to an election rally in Nagaon, AssamBJP workers attacked the car in which former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and I were travelling with stones and bottles. Police were requested well in advance to control the crowd, but the situation was allowed to escalate. The Election Commission of India should continue to remain a mute spectator to such acts of violence in BJP-ruled states. In fact, BJP should open a recruitment cell for criminals,” he wrote on X.
Gogoi Shares Video Of Car Post-Attack
Gogoi later shared a video that he said showed the alleged assault on the Congress convoy.
“This is a clear video of the assault on our convoy carrying former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan, AICC Secretary Manoj Chauhan, candidate Smt. Sivamoni Bora, state leaders and myself,” he said.

In another post, Gogoi alleged that Chauhan was injured after a stone hit him and shared a photograph of the damaged vehicle belonging to Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora.

Gogoi also accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of failing to prevent the violence and questioned whether the state police would identify those responsible.
“Of course, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma can send Assam police to Gujarat, Delhi and Maharashtra but now will be totally incapable of finding these stone pelters within Assam. Suddenly Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will plead incompetence. Election Commission of India will not order any transfers or suspensions,” he said.
Baghel Accuses Sarma’s Supporters For Attack
Baghel also accused supporters of the Assam chief minister of attacking the convoy and alleged that the violence was intended to disrupt the Congress campaign.
“CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s goons threw stones at our vehicle and smashed the glass of the vehicle carrying AICC secretary Manoj Chauhan. Their objective is to spread fear and violence so that we cannot campaign. But Himanta Biswa Sarma should understand that we are not people who can be intimidated. If our ancestors did not fear the British, we will never fear these black thieves,” he said.
Baghel further alleged that the convoy faced black flags and stone-pelting even while returning from the campaign event.
“When our government was in power in Chhattisgarh, Himanta Biswa Sarma campaigned there for days against us, yet not a finger was raised against him—there wasn’t even a hint of trouble. In contrast, here, our convoy was pelted with stones, vehicles were damaged, and people were injured. Even as we were returning—after facing black flags and stone-pelting—we were targeted again. On one side, there were BJP flags; on the otherblack flags; and stones were thrown, causing injuries,” Baghel said.
The Congress has said several vehicles in the convoy were damaged and that Chauhan sustained injuries. A police complaint has also been filed over the alleged attack.
The incident occurred amid campaigning for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, scheduled for October 6. The seat fell vacant after Pradyut Bordoloi’s resignation from the Lok Sabha.
