The ICC on Wednesday, March 11, rejected the claims of travel bias towards the South Africa and West Indies teams and said that both squads will be leaving India within the next 24 hours. South Africa and West Indies have been left stranded in the country despite their campaigns ending well before the final, which was played on March 8 due to the military tensions in West Asia.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the ICC said that all members of the South Africa team would leave India within 36 hours. They also noted that nine members of the West Indies side are already on their way home and the rest of the contingent have been booked flights to depart within 24 hours.
“On current arrangements, the South Africa contingent will begin departing for South Africa tonight, with all members expected to have departed within the next 36 hours. Of the West Indies contingent, nine members are already travelling to the Caribbean, while the remaining 16 are booked on flights departing India within the next 24 hours. We will provide updates on further departures as confirmed arrangements are in place,” read the statement from the ICC.
The international governing body also responded to the allegations of bias, saying that the decisions regarding the travel of the Proteas and the Windes were made on the basis of safety, feasibility and welfare.
The ICC rejects any suggestion that these decisions have been driven by anything other than safety, feasibility and welfare. Suggestions otherwise across a variety of media platforms from people uninformed of the situation are as unhelpful as they are incorrect.
