A building collapse at Satya Niketan Market in Delhi has triggered a major rescue operation, with BJP MLA Anil Sharma saying that several students are feared trapped inside the structure.

Sharma said the building was being used as a PG accommodation by students who had come from different places to study. He said it was difficult to confirm the exact number of people trapped inside the building at this stage, but there was no doubt that students were inside when the structure collapsed.

‘Some Students Making Calls From Inside’

Speaking about the ongoing rescue operation, Sharma said some students were still making phone calls from inside the collapsed building, indicating that others could remain trapped.

“Some students are even making calls from within, and it appears there are still others trapped inside, so rescue efforts are ongoing,” Sharma said.

Six Rescued So Far

According to Delhi Police, a PCR call regarding the building collapse was received at PS South Campus at around 1:34 PM.

Teams from the Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service and DDMA, along with fire tenders and ambulances, reached the spot and began rescue operations.

Local enquiry found that the building was 40–50 years old, with a basement and five upper floors, and was being used as PG accommodation. Repair work was underway in the basement when the incident occurred.

So far, six persons have been rescued and shifted to hospitals. Of those taken for treatment, two were reported to be critical, while one person has died.

Rescue Efforts Continue

Sharma said the government was focused on rescuing those who may still be trapped inside the building.

“We are praying to God, and the Chief Minister has dispatched a full team here. The entire government is deeply concerned and focused on ensuring the students are rescued that is our primary objective,” he said.

Search and rescue operations continue at the site.
