Delhi Capitals are running out of road. The playoffs are still theoretically within reach, but the margin for error has all but disappeared, and the decisions made in the next few days could define their entire season.
And in the middle of all this pressure, one question refuses to go away: is now finally the time to hand Prithvi Shaw a game?
The man who never quite got going
There is something almost poetic and painful about Shaw’s story. He arrived in senior cricket with everything. The footwork, the instinct, the swagger at the crease that you simply cannot coach. He looked like the real deal, and for a while, he was.
But somewhere along the way, it all got complicated. The discipline questions, the form slumps, the sense that a generational talent was slowly slipping through the cracks. Now, at a stage in his career where every opportunity feels like it could be his last in the IPLShaw has not played a single game for Delhi this season.
When DC brought him back to where it all started, there was a quiet optimism about it. A second chance at the franchise that first believed in him. So far, that chance has not come.
The case for and against
It is completely fair to wonder why Shaw over Abishek Porel. In DC’s last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Porel was the only batsman who showed up. He played with freedom and intent on a day when almost everyone else went through the motions. He also offers something increasingly valuable in T20 cricket: a right-left combination at the top of the order that keeps the opposition guessing.
But the argument for Shaw is less about statistics and more about psychology.
When a team is struggling and morale is low, sometimes what you need is not the safest option. You need a spark. Shaw, for all his recent struggles, is a player who genuinely wants to prove people wrong right now. That kind of hunger, that desperation to succeed, can be infectious in a dressing room that badly needs something to rally around. It is fair to say that Shaw might’ve not shown that hunger to succeed as the many other generational talents we have seen in Indian cricket.
But the situation dictates that the current combination is clearly not working. The top order has been the biggest problem, and if Pathum Nissanka makes way, Shaw coming in at the top allows David Miller to slot into the middle order where his big-match experience is worth its weight in gold. The bowling has been decent enough. It is the batting that needs fixing, and it needs fixing now.
What DC actually need to do
The math is straightforward even if the execution is anything but. Delhi need to win all their remaining games, win big where possible, and hope results elsewhere break in their favour.
That is a tall order when you look at what is coming. After KKR on Friday, DC travel to Dharamsala to face Punjab Kings, before returning home to take on Rajasthan Royals, and then finishing with another trip to face KKR at Eden Gardens. No gimmes. No soft touches. Just four games against sides who all have something to play for.
The bowling can hold its own on most days. That side of the team has shown enough quality to keep Delhi competitive. But if the top order keeps misfiring, none of that will matter.
The bottom line
Delhi Capitals need a jolt. Not a restructure, not a philosophical shift, just something different. Something that tells the dressing room that the season is not over yet.
Maybe that something is Prithvi Shaw. Maybe it is not. But with the playoffs slipping away game by game, playing it safe has stopped being an option.
Sometimes you have to roll the dice.
