Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday turned the Gaza Summit in Egypt into an unexpected tribute to US President Donald Trump, showering him with praise and calling him a “man of peace.”

Sharif thanked Trump for “stopping the India-Pak war” and said he would once again nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize for “saving millions of lives not only in South Asia but also in the Middle East.”

Trump, clearly amused by the lavish praise, smiled and responded, “Wow! I didn’t expect that.”

While the US president appeared to enjoy the moment, Sharif’s remarks drew sharp criticism at home, where social media users accused him of sycophancy and damaging Pakistan’s image internationally. Many said his comments were unbecoming of a national leader and undermined the country’s dignity on the global stage.

Columnist S.L. Kanthan accused the Pakistani Prime Minister of “bootlicking,” writing on X, “Whenever Trump wants his shoes shined like never before, he invites Pakistan’s tiny Prime Minister. Have never seen so much cringe in geopolitics.”

Pakistani politician and historian Ammar Ali Jan also condemned the remarks, posting, “Shehbaz Sharif’s constant and needless flattery of Donald Trump is a source of embarrassment for Pakistanis across the world.”

Another X user, identifying as Assad, voiced similar frustration, writing, “Shehbaz Sharif is an insult to the 240 million people of Pakistan.”

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in Egypt, lauded US President Donald Trump’s peace efforts, backing his claim of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after tensions flared in May following Operation Sindoor. Sharif described Trump as a “man of peace.”

During the Gaza Summit in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh, Trump paused his address and turned toward Sharif, who was standing behind him. “Do you want to say something?” Trump asked, prompting the Pakistani premier to repeat his earlier praise. “Say what you said to me the other day,” Trump told him with a smile.
