Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky, known for mocking Vladimir Putin, was shot dead in eastern Poland, police arrest Belarusians.

A Russian artist, who had been known for mocking President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead in eastern Poland, police said, adding that two Belarusians have been arrested.
The 44-year-old victim, identified as Semyon Skrepetsky, was shot on a street near the city center Monday morning and later died of his injuries, Anadolu Agency quoted the police.
“An investigation is being conducted… into the murder of a 44-year-old citizen of the Russian Federation… known in the media as Semyon Skrepecki,” the spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin, Marcin Kozak, told reporters.
He further said that two Belarusian nationals have been arrested in connection with his murder.
Indicating that it was a targeted killing, police spokesman Andrzej Fijolek said: “If someone approaches a specific person on the street and fires shots, everything indicates they planned to kill them.”
Anadolu cited Polish broadcasters TVN and wPolsce24 reporting that the victim was Skrepetsky, an artist whose satirical cartoons frequently mocked Putin, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and other figures associated with the Russian government. He reportedly left Russia in 2021 due to fear of political persecution.
It is interesting to note that just before Skrepetsky’s killing he took part in a protest outside the Russian embassy in Berlin. Images even circulated on social media showing him carrying artwork depicting Soviet leader Joseph Stalin feeding a baby Putin.
Such kind of incident is not new as a Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was shot dead in 2006 after years of criticism of the Kremlin and the war in Chechnya.
