US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov concluded their meeting in New York after talks lasting just over 50 minutes, with the Russia-Ukraine war and prospects for a settlement at the centre of discussions.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly as Washington continues diplomatic efforts related to the war. Ahead of the talks, Moscow said it wanted to clarify the US State Department’s position and assess Washington’s mediation efforts.
Ukraine War At The Centre Of Talks
The discussions focused primarily on the war in Ukraine and the possibility of finding a settlement. Rubio and Lavrov have held several face-to-face meetings since 2025 as the US has sought to maintain diplomatic channels with Moscow.

Their previous detailed meeting took place in Manila on July 23 on the sidelines of ASEAN-related events. That discussion lasted around 30–35 minutes and also focused on the Ukraine war.
US Invites Putin To G20 Summit
After the meeting, Rubio said the United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled to be held in Miami in December.
“We invited President Putin. We believe this is a good opportunity for him to meet not only with President Donald Trump, but also with other world leaders. We hope he accepts the invitation,” Rubio said.
Rubio also said that Russia and Ukraine had shown interest in a limited ceasefire involving energy infrastructure and grain-related supplies. He said such an arrangement would not bring the war to an end but could help ease some of the pressure created by the conflict.
What Happens Next?
The latest meeting comes as Washington continues to explore possible avenues for reducing hostilities and creating conditions for negotiations. The discussions between Rubio and Lavrov also keep the US-Russia diplomatic channel open while the war remains unresolved.
