A private school in Rajkot has introduced an initiative under which students receive Rs 5 for every hour they spend reading, with the aim of encouraging children to develop a regular reading habit.
The initiative comes at a time when students are increasingly spending time on mobile phones and other digital devices. The school hopes that a financial incentive will encourage students to pick up books and gradually develop an interest in reading, reported News18 Gujarati.
Students participating in the initiative say the experiment has changed their attitude towards books. Some said they had earlier not realised that reading could be enjoyable, but the encouragement from the school prompted them to start reading more. They now say they find reading books more engaging than spending time on mobile phones.
Students Can Choose What And Where They Read
The school does not prescribe a particular book or impose a fixed reading schedule. Students can choose what they want to read, where they want to read and when they want to read.
To track their reading, the school maintains a chart for each student. The chart records the name of the book, the number of hours spent reading and the number of pages completed. Parents and class teachers are also required to sign the record.
However, the school says the incentive is not based merely on the student’s claim of having read a book. According to the class teacher, the book is kept available when the reading record is submitted. The teacher may ask the student questions about what they have read. The record is signed only if the student is able to answer questions related to the content.
At the end of each month, the student receives an incentive based on the recorded reading hours.
The school administration says the initiative is intended to encourage students to gradually move away from excessive mobile-phone use and towards books.
The school believes that developing a regular reading habit could also have an impact on students’ academic performance. According to the administration, better reading habits can eventually help improve students’ results, while the initiative could also enhance the school’s reputation in the long run.
The experiment is based on the school’s belief that students may need an initial push to discover the benefits and enjoyment of reading. Once the habit develops, the school hopes students will continue reading even without the financial incentive.
