Bengaluru Metro’s Pink Line has received the crucial safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), paving the way for the opening of the 7.38-km elevated stretch between Kalena Agrahara and Tavarekere. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the section on November 15, with passenger services likely to begin soon after the inauguration.

In an order dated October 28, 2026, the Commissioner of Railway Safety sanctioned the opening of the newly constructed double-line sectionincluding the introduction of 750V DC electric traction, for public carriage of passengers. The clearance follows safety inspections, train testing and speed trials conducted earlier this month.

The stretch, part of Reach 6 of Phase II of the Bengaluru Metro project, has six stations and covers approximately 7.38 km. The inspection was conducted on October 6, 7 and 8, covering the entire section, the Kothanur maintenance depot and the Operations Control Centre (OCC) at Baiyappanahalli.

The safety commissioner’s order states that a speed trial was conducted on both the up and down lines on October 27 using a special train fitted with an OMS 2000 system. Speeds of up to 90 kmph were achieved during the trial, and no peak acceleration exceeding 0.15 g was recorded.

“Based on the inspections, results of tests carried out, speed trials and perusal of the certificates/documents and other information submitted by BMRCL, I am of the opinion that the provisions of Section 15(1) of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, have been substantially complied with,” the order states.

The commissioner accordingly authorised the opening of the up and down lines for passenger services, subject to specified conditions. The order permits operations with Grade of Automation 2 (GoA2) at speeds of up to 80 kmph, or the speed permitted by the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, whichever is lower. The maximum speed on platforms has been restricted to 60 kmph.

However, the clearance comes with a series of conditions relating to operational readiness, staff training, maintenance facilities and safety compliance. BMRCL has also been directed to closely monitor operations during the first month of revenue services and submit a detailed report on observations and corrective measures, wherever necessary.
