Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has once again started importing crude oil from Russia. According to Bloomberg report, the company has resumed purchasing Russian oil for its world’s largest refinery located in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The special thing is that Reliance has got a special exemption of one month from America for this. This news has come at a time when Reliance had recently limited the import of Russian oil due to fear of sanctions from Western countries.

America gave one month ‘secret’ relief

According to sources, the US government has given Reliance one month’s time to buy oil from Russian state-owned company ‘Rosneft’.

Earlier in October, America had imposed strict sanctions on Russian companies like Rosneft and Lukoil and gave foreign companies time till November 21 to settle their old deals.

Now, after this additional relief to Reliance, around 15 Russian ships have delivered crude oil to Jamnagar since the last week of November.

Exports will be used in domestic units

Reliance has found a middle path between the restrictions. There are two refineries in the Jamnagar complex. One is the SEZ refinery from where oil is exported to Europe and America, and the other is the Domestic (DTA) refinery which produces oil for the Indian market.

The company has made it clear that the Russian oil coming now will be processed only in domestic units (DTA). This will enable the company to avoid European rules that ban the import of petrol and diesel made from Russian oil.

Effect of strict rules of European Union

The European Union (EU) has announced that from January 21, 2026, it will not buy fuel from refineries that have used Russian oil in the last 60 days. In view of this, Reliance has made its export unit (SEZ) completely ‘Russia-free’.

Now only crude oil from the Middle East and other countries is being used there, so that there is no impact on exports to Europe.

Company wants to take advantage of cheap Russian oil

Since the Russia-Ukraine war, India has been getting much cheaper crude oil from Russia. There is also a long agreement between Reliance and Rosneft to buy about 25 million tonnes (5 lakh barrels per day) of oil annually.

Although there were some interruptions due to sanctions, but now Reliance wants to take advantage of this cheap oil again through non-sanctions (which are not banned) suppliers and American exemption.

Oil supply from Middle East also increased

During November, when Russian oil supplies were low, Reliance increased its purchases of oil from countries like Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia by 41%.

Now Reliance is changing its strategy so that on one hand it follows western sanctions and on the other hand it also maintains its business relations with Russia.
