Meta is partnering with Reliance Industries to build its first AI-enabled data center in India. Under this partnership, a 168 MW capacity data center will be built in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which is targeted to be delivered within two years.

Under this partnership, Reliance will fully develop the data center in Jamnagar. Reliance will provide end-to-end services including design, construction, utility management, renewable power, network connectivity and managed services for the project.

India ready to be at the forefront of global AI revolution

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, said, “This partnership with Meta is a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Meta’s creation of India’s first built-to-suit data center shows that India is poised to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution. Jamnagar will become a landmark destination for hyperscale AI computing.”

Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Meta, said, “We are proud to work with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally and deepen our long-term investment in India’s economy.”

Heavy investment on AI infrastructure and ‘meta compute’

  • Meta is investing in expanding its capacity to meet its growing AI needs. Zuckerberg plans to create ‘decades of gigawatts’ of capacity this decade, and ‘hundreds of gigawatts’ or more in the future, through a top-level initiative called ‘Meta Compute’.
  • In January 2026, he appointed Dina Powell McCormick, a former advisor to the Donald Trump administration, as president and vice chair, focusing on Meta’s AI infrastructure and financing in collaboration with governments. In April, Meta raised its full-year capital expenditure forecast to $125 billion to $145 billion from $115-135 billion.
  • Meta said that through their major network investments including Project Waterworth (the world’s longest sub-sea cable system), they will bring industry-leading connectivity to the sector and provide speed and quality service to the Indian community.

Announcement of partnership with Cleanmax and Fourth Partner Energy

Meta has also announced a separate partnership with two leading clean energy providers in India for approximately 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy along with the data centre.

  • Cleanmax: New solar and wind projects worth 837 megawatts (MW) will be developed in Rajasthan and Karnataka. With this, the total announced capacity with CleanMax has crossed 900 MW.
  • Fourth Partner Energy: This company will supply electricity through 88 MW new solar and wind projects in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

Google-Amazon also involved in the race to make India a digital hub

The government is making continuous efforts to make the country a global hub of digital infrastructure. The plans of other big companies in the market are as follows…

  • Google: In October 2025, it was announced to build a large-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam with an investment of $ 15 billion. Construction has begun in April 2026 in collaboration with AdaniConnex and Ertel’s Nextra, with a major capacity targeted to go live by late 2028 or early 2029.
  • OpenAI: Announced partnership with Tata Group in February 2026. It will become the first customer of TCS’s ‘HyperVault’ data center business, which can scale from 100 MW to 1 GW.
  • Microsoft: In December 2025, it announced an investment of $17.5 billion to enhance cloud, AI infrastructure and sovereign digital capabilities which will run till 2029.
  • Amazon: In December 2025, India unveiled a plan to invest an additional $35 billion by 2030, which includes $12.7 billion for cloud and AI infrastructure initiatives.

What is AI-enabled data center?

Ordinary data centers are used only to store and process data. In contrast, AI-enabled data centers are equipped with specialized liquid cooling systems and high-powered graphic processing units (GPUs).

They have the ability to process heavy and complex Artificial Intelligence algorithms like Machine Learning, Deep Learning and Chatbots at very high speed.
