Baby food manufacturer HiPP has issued a precautionary recall of several baby food products after samples tested positive for rat poison in Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic, AP reported.

Officials reported that the suspected contamination was found in 190-gram jars of carrot and potato baby food intended for infants aged five months and older. The affected products were sold through SPAR supermarkets in Austria. The first contaminated sample was identified on Saturday.

In an official statement, HiPP emphasized that the issue was not related to a manufacturing defect. “This recall is not due to any product or quality defect on our part. The jars left our facility in perfect condition,” the company said, adding that the incident appears to be a “criminal act” currently under investigation.

As a precaution, HiPP is recalling all its baby food jars sold through SPAR outlets in Austria, including EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt stores. Customers have been advised that they can return the products for a full refund, even without a receipt.

Retailers in Slovakia and the Czech Republic have also removed all HiPP baby food jars from their shelves following the reports.

Authorities stated that the tampered jars reportedly had a spoiled odor, raising suspicion. The investigation began after a customer reported a jar that appeared to have been interfered with.

Police confirmed that no cases of consumption have been reported so far.
