- India Becomes Europes Second Largest Ammunition Supplier | Defense Export

India has emerged as a global arms exporter. According to Trade Data Monitor, after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, India supplied ammunition worth Rs 8,271 crore to European countries, which includes artillery and mortar shells.
According to the report, India’s defense exports to Eastern and Central Europe have increased by 1,600%. India is now the second largest ammunition supplier in the region after South Korea. Four years ago it was at 28th position. At the same time, by March 2026, India became the third largest foreign supplier of aircraft, helicopter and drone parts to Israel, which was at the ninth position in 2023.
India has a big defense industry, Europe needs it
Simon Wageman, senior researcher at SIPRI, a Swedish organization that researches arms trade, says that weapons are being imported from India to meet the needs of Ukraine and the defense demands of Europe.
India has a developed defense industry. At the same time, Walter Ladwig, a political scientist at King’s College London, says that Indian companies are selling arms to European countries instead of directly giving them to Ukraine.
The same number of weapons were sold in one year as were sold in 6 years.
On one hand, India’s defense industry is supplying ammunition to its allies in Europe and Ukraine, and on the other hand, it is also meeting the military needs of Israel in West Asia on a large scale.
In the last two years till March 2026, India has given Israel about Rs 630 crore. worth of artillery shells, mortar rounds and explosives, which is equal to the total exports of the previous six years.
