If you have booked the ticket before today i.e. 26th December, then you will not have to pay any extra charge.
Rail travel has become expensive from today. Because Indian Railways has increased the fare by 2 paise per kilometer. After the new change, if you are booking a ticket to travel more than 215 kilometers, then you will get the ticket at the increased price only. Accordingly, if you are booking a ticket for a distance of 1000 kilometers, then you will have to pay Rs 20 extra.
At the same time, if you have booked the ticket before today i.e. 26th December, then you will not have to pay any extra charge nor will the revised fare be visible on your ticket. Today or after today, while traveling by TTE, there will be an increased fare even if you get tickets made at the train or station.

This is a ticket from Anand Junction in Gujarat to Muzaffarpur Junction in Bihar. The distance between the two stations is 2067km. There is a difference of Rs 45 in the fare before and after December 26.
Fare has not increased for daily pass and short distances
There has been no change in the fares for those traveling a distance of less than 215 kilometers and for Monthly Season Ticket (Pass) holders. Railways estimates that this change will earn it an additional income of Rs 600 crore annually. Railways had announced this on December 21.

Relief for short route and season ticket holders
Railways has given relief to crores of passengers traveling on short routes. There has been no increase in fares for journeys less than 215 kilometres. This means that short distance travel will remain as affordable as before.
Apart from this, there is news of relief for the passengers traveling daily. Railways has not made any change in the prices of sub-urban trains and Monthly Season Tickets (MST). This will not put any burden on lakhs of passengers traveling by local trains in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
Why did Railways need to increase fares?
According to Railway Ministry sources, this fare increase is necessary to fund the increasing operational cost and infrastructure development projects. Railways is constantly working on improving its services, running new trains and modernizing stations.
The additional income of Rs 600 crore received from this fare increase will be used for these purposes. It is the second largest employer in the country and it costs heavily to maintain its network.
Rent increased for the second time in a year
Earlier on July 1 this year, the government had increased the rail fares. Then the fare of non-AC mail/express trains was increased by 1 paise per kilometer and the fare of AC class was increased by 2 paise per kilometer. Earlier in 2020, the passenger fare was increased.
