Video of protests against the Pakistani army is viral on social media.

A big protest is being held against Shahbaz Sharif’s government in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). On Monday, shops, markets and roads were closed in the entire area on the appeal of POK’s Awami Action Committee (AAC).

Local people have taken to the streets against inflation, unemployment, and excesses of the Pakistani Army. Incidents of stone pelting on the convoy of security forces have also come to light.

On Saturday, security forces opened fire on unarmed protesters in Kotli, after which the protesters shouted slogans like “Hum Tumha Tumi Death Hai”.

Army opened fire on protesters

The government has deployed heavy security to suppress the demonstrations. Thousands of people are raising slogans like independence and Pakistani army go back in cities like Kotli, Rawalkot and Muzaffarabad.

AAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir said- We are only asking for our rights, which we have not got for 70 years. Now the government will have to give us our rights.

AAC has placed 38 demands before the government, out of which 3 are prominent …

  • Demand to abolish 12 assembly seats for Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan.
  • The benefits of local people should be taken care of in electricity projects.
  • Demand for exemption on flour and electricity bills, as people are upset with inflation.

Journalists entry ban in Pok

The Government of Pakistan has banned the entry of journalists and tourists in POK. Local reporters are also alleging that they are being prevented from doing neutral coverage. Apart from this, many human rights organizations are also raising their voice on this issue.

The internet has been discontinued from midnight in Pok. The government is afraid that these demonstrations may turn into widespread demand for independence.

There were many demonstrations in POK before

POK has also had protests against the army and the government many times before. In May last year, people went on strike for cheap flour and electricity. People say that Mangala Dam present in Pok produces electricity, yet they do not get cheap electricity.

Similarly, in 2023, people came out on the streets against increasing electricity prices and removal of wheat subsidy. In 2022, people blocked roads against a government law and raised slogans of independence.
