BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan described Kharge’s remarks as an insult to the electoral mandate, arguing that the comments violated standards expected of political leaders

Mallikarjun Kharge’s (left) remark on PM Modi has snowballed into a controversy.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a sharp attack on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan accusing the Congress leadership of lowering the standards of public discourse and demanding an unconditional apology.
Reacting to Kharge’s controversial remarks, Kesavan said they reflected what he described as Rahul Gandhi’s “uncivilised, uncultured politics of poisonous hate” and accused the Congress of repeatedly resorting to personal attacks against the prime minister.
“Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s disgraceful remarks personally attacking and targeting Prime Minister Modi only reflect and echo Rahul Gandhi’s uncivilised, uncultured politics of poisonous hate,” Kesavan said.
He further alleged that the Congress had brought public discourse to an unprecedented low and claimed that personal attacks against PM Modi were not an isolated occurrence. “The morally and politically bankrupt Congress party has plummeted public discourse to the lowest of lows in our country, and this is not the first time the Congress leadership has personally abused Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he said.
Referring to previous controversies involving remarks about the prime minister’s family, Kesavan alleged that Congress leaders had repeatedly targeted PM Modi personally, including through attacks on his late mother.
He also described Kharge’s remarks as an insult to the electoral mandate, arguing that the comments violated standards expected of political leaders holding public office. “Mallikarjun Kharge’s unpardonable and indefensible remarks are also a grievous insult to the mandate given by 140 crore Indians, and Mr. Kharge has violated and breached all standards of public conduct,” Kesavan said.
The BJP spokesperson called on the Congress leadership to apologise, insisting that the party president’s remarks could not be justified. “The entire Congress leadership and Congress President Kharge need to tender an unconditional apology immediately,” he added.

What Did Mallikarjun Kharge Say?
The controversy erupted on Sunday during a Congress programme at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shri Krishna Singh.
Kharge was addressing the gathering and attacking the BJP-led government over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He said the Congress would send those responsible for the alleged irregularities to jail.
During the speech, a person in the audience interrupted him, insisting that PM Modi would not leave office. According to reports, the person said the prime minister would not go anywhere unless there was a rebellion against him.
Kharge responded, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega”—a remark that triggered an immediate political controversy.
The exchange took place amid Kharge’s broader attack on the BJP and the Election Commission of India over the SIR exercise. The Congress has alleged that the revision process could lead to the deletion of opposition supporters’ names from electoral rolls, an allegation that has been contested by the BJP.
Amit Shah Accuses Congress Of Crossing Limits Of Decency
Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly criticised Kharge, describing the remark as indecent and accusing the Congress of repeatedly targeting PM Modi and his family.
Shah argued that the Congress’s political discourse had deteriorated over the years, citing previous controversies involving remarks about the prime minister’s mother, his humble background and descriptions of PM Modi as a “merchant of death”.
He also linked the latest controversy to what he described as the Congress’s frustration following repeated electoral defeats, accusing the party of relying on personal attacks rather than substantive political issues.
Nitin Nabin Calls It ‘Ideological Bankruptcy’
BJP president Nitin Nabin also condemned Kharge’s remarks, describing the language used against the prime minister as a reflection of the Congress’s “ideological bankruptcy”.
Nabin argued that political opposition should be conducted with dignity and criticised the reference to deceased family members during public speeches. He warned that people were closely watching what he described as the Congress’s indecent politics and would respond at the appropriate time.
