PM Modi Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:30 PM today, a day after the defeat of a key women’s reservation bill in Parliament. The Lok Sabha witnessed a heated debate as the proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed to secure the required support.
According to sources cited by PTI, the PM Modi is likely to speak about the developments in Parliament and the broader issue of women’s representation in politics.
The bill had also proposed increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816. This expansion was meant to accommodate the reservation for women ahead of the 2029 general elections, after a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.
The Bill Couldn’t Secure A Majority
The proposal required a two-thirds majority to pass. However, the ruling BJP-led alliance fell short of the numbers. During voting on Friday night, 298 Members of Parliament supported the bill, while 230 voted against it. Out of the 528 members who participated, at least 352 votes were needed for it to be cleared.
Political Uproar
The outcome triggered fresh political debate, with the BJP and NDA leaders holding protests. Women Members of Parliament from the BJP staged a protest inside the Parliament House complex on Friday.
Carrying placards and raising slogans such as “India will not tolerate this insult to women,” the MPs criticised the opposition for blocking the proposed legislation. They alleged that parties led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi intentionally prevented the passage of a bill that sought to improve women’s representation in legislative bodies.
Amit Shah Accuses Opposition Of Blocking Women’s Reservation Bill
Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the opposition of blocking women’s reservation, opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, maintained that they support the quota but oppose its linkage with delimitation.
“Yesterday in Parliament, they came up with a new Bill. They said it was a Women’s Bill, but that was already passed in 2023. The hidden agenda behind that Bill was delimitation. The idea was to reduce Tamil Nadu’s representation in the Parliament of India and weaken southern and smaller states. We defeated that Bill in Parliament yesterday,” he said during a campaign rally in Ponneri, Tamil Nadu.
