PM Modi Announces New Trilateral Partnership With Australia, Canada To Bolster Tech, Innovation

The partnership with Canada is significant, given the recent tensions between the two countries and the changing geopolitical situation under US President Donald Trump.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced an Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership after meeting with his counterparts, Anthony Albanese from Australia and Mark Carney from Canada, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

PM Modi said the partnership would bring together three democratic nations across three continents to work more closely in areas such as advanced tech, clean energy and artificial intelligence. He said all sides were committed to ensuring that technological progress benefits future generations.

“The initiative will deepen collaboration between democratic partners across three continents and three oceans in emerging technologies, support diversification of supply chains, clean energy and mass adoption of AI. We look forward to working together to guarantee a better future for the coming generations,” he said on X.

This trilateral initiative is expected to strengthen collaboration in emerging technologies, clean energy, AI, and supply-chain resilience. It marks a unified effort by three democratic nations to advance innovation and ensure long-term stability.

According to a statement by the Canadian government, the initiative will draw on the natural strengths of the three countries and have an emphasis on green energy innovation and building resilient supply chains, including in critical minerals.

“It will deepen their respective ambition and strategic collaboration towards net zero and drive further diversification of supply chains towards a secure, sustainable, and resilient future. The Partnership will also examine the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of our citizens,” it added.

India-Canada Ties

This agreement with Canada is significant for India as it comes after months of strained ties between the two countries under former PM Justin Trudeau, and the changing geopolitical situation led by US President Donald Trump’s bullish trade policies.

The Canadian political establishment is gradually distancing itself from the Khalistani separatist movement as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government seeks to rebuild and strengthen relations with India. Carney, who replaced Trudeau, is now attempting to move past the period of tensions caused by the latter and is trying to restore stable engagement with New Delhi.

There has also been an uptick in official engagement. Canadian minister Anita Anand visited India recently, and her colleague Maninder Sidhu is expected in New Delhi soon. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar travelled to Canada for the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Indian government sources told CNN-News18 that New Delhi and Ottawa are rebuilding trust through controlled, issue-specific interactions.

Prime Minister Modi received a warm and colourful welcome on Friday as he arrived in South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit. This is PM Modi’s fourth official visit to South Africa.

On Friday, PM Modi also held a bilateral meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The two leaders discussed key areas of cooperation and ongoing developments between their countries.
