Parliament Monsoon Session 2026, July 20 Live Updates: The Monsoon Session of Parliament is set to begin today amid expectations of a stormy start, with the Opposition preparing to corner the Centre over a range of political and public issues, while the government is expected to push its legislative agenda during the session, which will continue until August 13.
Ahead of the session, Opposition parties, led by the Congress, announced that they would seek discussions on the alleged theft of offerings at Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, the NEET-UG paper leak, rising inflation, fuel-related concerns, large-scale defections from Opposition parties, and the alleged forceful hospitalisation of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Congress MP Kumari Selja said her party would raise issues concerning students, the alleged Ram Temple donation theft, inflation and petrol prices. She also questioned the government’s policy on ethanol-blended fuel, saying consumers were facing problems and deserved answers.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the Opposition believes several pressing national issues deserve priority over the Bills listed by the government. He also urged the Centre to show “sensitivity” regarding the alleged Ram Temple donation theft, referring to the joint letter sent by Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Congress leader Manish Tewari said Parliament should also deliberate on the issue of large-scale defections, arguing that the present composition of the Lok Sabha differs significantly from the mandate delivered by voters in the 2024 general election.
Ahead of the proceedings, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), where representatives of the government and Opposition discussed the legislative agenda and suggested issues of public importance for debate. The Speaker appealed to all political parties to ensure constructive discussions, meaningful participation and the smooth functioning of both Houses.
The Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee is also scheduled to meet on the opening day of the session to finalise the allocation of time for debates and legislative business.
The Monsoon Session is expected to witness sharp exchanges between the treasury and Opposition benches on several contentious issues. It will also mark the parliamentary debut of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), formed by 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs who merged their faction and aligned with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to address the media at Hans Dwar in Parliament House ahead of the commencement of the session.
