A fellow para-athlete has been arrested for the alleged murder of national-level gold medallist Chirag Tyagi, with investigators suspecting the killing was driven by a grudge linked to a document verification dispute.

The arrest has stunned India’s para-sports fraternity, particularly because the accused, Yash Khatik, had previously trained alongside Tyagi before becoming the central figure in the murder investigation.

Fellow Athlete Under Scanner

Police detained Khatik on Saturday evening, hours after Tyagi’s body was found near Sai Upvan in Ghaziabad. According to investigators, both athletes knew each other through the para-sports circuit and had trained together in the past.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhawal Jaiswal said the probe uncovered a possible motive rooted in a complaint Tyagi had lodged during a document verification process.

According to police, the complaint allegedly resulted in Khatik’s eligibility being cancelled, triggering resentment that investigators believe eventually escalated into a deadly act of revenge.

During questioning, Khatik allegedly confessed to shooting Tyagi with a pistol, police said.

Rising Star’s Journey Cut Short

Tyagi, 24, had been enjoying the most successful phase of his sporting career.

Just two days before his death, the Muradnagar resident won gold in the 400-metre race at a national competition in Bengaluru. The triumph secured his qualification for the Para Asian Games in Japan later this year and placed him among India’s emerging para-athletics talents.

He had recently completed a training camp in Pune and returned to Delhi on May 29.

According to family members, Tyagi spoke to them on Saturday morning and said he would be home by afternoon. When his phone later became unreachable, the family grew concerned. They were eventually informed by police about the incident.

Investigation Ongoing

Police said preliminary examination of the body and evidence from the crime scene indicated that Tyagi had been shot dead.

Teams have been deployed to recover the firearm allegedly used in the crime, while investigators continue collecting evidence and recording statements.

Officials said all angles are being examined, although the alleged revenge motive linked to the verification complaint currently forms the centrepiece of the investigation.
