A Pakistan Air Force group captain was shot dead after stepping in to help a woman who was allegedly being abducted in Islamabad, police said on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday near Shaheen Chowk, where Group Captain Asim Tariq reportedly spotted a man attempting to force a woman onto a motorcycle after an argument. Suspecting an abduction attempt, Tariq stopped his car and confronted the man.
Group Captain Confronted Suspect
PTIciting police, reported that the suspect, identified as 20-year-old Saad Abbasi, allegedly drew a firearm during the confrontation and shot Tariq, who died at the scene.
Abbasi, who works as a salesman at a shop, was arrested later the same day, police said.
Accused Held Hours After Shooting
Reacting to the incident, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences and praised the officer’s actions.
“Sacrificing one’s life to protect an innocent woman is a shining example of the highest human values and dedicated service to the nation,” Zardari said, the news agency reported.
PM Sharif said Group Captain Tariq set an exceptional example of courage, bravery, and devotion to duty by sacrificing his life to protect the life and dignity of a woman.
He directed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and bring perpetrators to justice.
