Residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Jalalabad will now know their city as Parshurampuri after a decision to rename it was approved at a meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Monday.

The city’s civic body was also renamed Parshurampuri Nagar Palika Parishad from Jalalabad Nagar Palika Parishad.

Finance Minister Suresh Khanna of the Yogi Adityanath-led government said the demand for the name change had been pending for years.

Jalalabad, established during the Mughal period, is believed to have derived its name from Mughal emperor Akbar, whose full name was Abu’l-Fath Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. The town is also believed to be the birthplace of Lord Parshuram, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.

The name change comes at two crucial junctures — with the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections just months away and amid the government’s push to project Sambhal as the prophesied birthplace of Lord Kalki, the final avatar of Lord Vishnu.

“On Monday, the Cabinet gave unanimous consent to rename Jalalabad city and the Jalalabad Nagar Palika Parishad as Parshurampuri,” Khanna said.

Sharing the timeline of the renaming process, Khanna said the first proposal was received in April 2025. In June that year, the Uttar Pradesh government sought the Centre’s approval for the name change and received a no-objection certificate (NOC) in August 2025.

The municipal council had passed resolutions in favour of the name change in 2018 and again in 2023, according to a report by The Times of India. A separate report by Mint said Union Minister Jitin Prasada, who hails from the region, had also backed the move and thanked the Union government after the Ministry of Home Affairs cleared the proposal.

“Today, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has renamed Jalalabad to ‘Parshuram Puri’. The faith and sentiments of the people have been respected. I will express my gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister,” Prasada said, moments after the renaming.

The Uttar Pradesh government’s push to link the erstwhile Jalalabad with Lord Parshuram, the warrior-sage and sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, began in recent years. As part of the effort, the government undertook the beautification of the temple complex and nearby water bodies to boost religious tourism in the area.

The decision is the latest in a series of renaming exercises under the Yogi Adityanath government. Earlier, Allahabad and Faizabad were officially renamed Prayagraj and Ayodhya, respectively.
