Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has formed a panel for censorship of content shown on OTT platforms. This panel will decide that the content shown on OTT is not obscene, against culture, anti-national or having a negative impact on children.
RSS believes that some such content is being shown on OTT, which may have a negative impact on children and youth. The Sangh also connects it with Indian culture and social values. For this reason, the need to make more strict rules on OTT content is being discussed. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has earlier also expressed concern about OTT and digital content.

Will a censor board be formed for OTT?
At present no such censor board has been formed. RSS has just formed a panel, which will give suggestions on this issue. Only after the recommendations of the panel will it be decided what further arrangements can be made.
People associated with the Sangh have asked to make a system like Censor Board of films for OTT. If this happens, then arrangements can be made for pre-checking and certification of the content to be released on OTT.

While talking to Dainik Bhaskar, trade analyst Atul Mohan has said on this, there must be censorship on OTT. I completely agree with Mohan Bhagwat sir. Why just cinema, whether films are consumed on OTT or anywhere else, censoring is very important. India is a big country, we don’t know when, where and how someone’s sentiments get hurt. There have been many controversies in the past also.

Bhootnath director Vivek Sharma says, everyone thought that those who are not getting creative freedom in theater will get help on OTT, but the opposite happened. People made creative freedom mean obscenity.

How is OTT different from films?
Films released in theaters have to obtain certificate from CBFC i.e. Censor Board. Without this the film cannot be released in theatres. Whereas films and web series released on OTT do not have to obtain certificate from CBFC.
Many OTT platforms have been banned
Many complaints have been received regarding the content coming on OTT for a long time. After which strict rules related to OTT are also being made. In the last two years, 50 OTT platforms have been removed.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) of the Central Government has blocked 5 online streaming platforms (OTT) earlier this year. These include MoodXVIP, Koyal Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Feel and Jugnu. The government says that obscene and objectionable content was being shown on these platforms. This content was found to violate the IT Act 2000, IT Rules 2021, Section 292 of the IPC and laws related to depicting women in a negative light.
In July last year, 25 OTT platforms including Ullu-ALT were banned. In March 2024, the government had banned 18 OTT platforms due to obscene content. Besides, 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 social media handles were also blocked.
