Six English clubs made the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League this year: a first in competition history.
Two weeks later, the ‘biggest league in Europe’ scripted another first: the first time that four teams from the same country were all knocked out in the same round.

Only Arsenal and Liverpool made it through to the quarter-finals. The rest? Eliminated in emphatic and embarrassing fashion.
A Historic First… For All The Wrong Reasons
To say that Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all merely crashed out would be an understatement — they were forcibly booted out with ease by their opponents.
The Premier League teams conceded a staggering 30 goals between them, while only managing to score 18 in reply. So much for defensive solidity.

City Stopped by Familiar Foes
City’s European nightmare continued against Real Madrid.
Drawn against the 15-time champions yet again, Pep Guardiola’s side were brushed aside 5-1 on aggregate — adding yet another painful chapter in a now-familiar rivalry.
Chelsea Crushed by PSG
Paris Saint-Germain showed no mercy against Chelsea.
The defending champions ran riot across both legs, handing the Blues an 8-2 aggregate defeat that exposed the gulf in quality.
Newcastle Fade, Spurs Fall Short
Newcastle United actually offered some resistance against Barcelona — for a very brief moment.
They stayed competitive for 135 minutes before collapsing late, conceding four second-leg goals to lose 8-3 on aggregate.
Meanwhile, relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur couldn’t find a way past Atletico Madrid, eventually going down 7-5 over two legs.
The Survivors
In the end, only Arsenal and Liverpool progressed — arguably helped by more favourable ties against Bayer Leverkusen and Galatasaray, respectively.
But the bigger picture is hard to ignore: for all the talk of Premier League dominance, Europe delivered a harsh correction.
Six teams entered with dreams of rewriting history. Only two remain.
So, I guess it’s fair to say that the illusion of English football supremacy has taken a serious hit.
