Taking a lesson from the failure of PM-Vani, the government is preparing to introduce a new and advanced public Wi-Fi system. The aim of this new system is to improve the user experience and make digital payments more secure.

Now users will not need a separate OTP for each hotspot. Login can be done with a single OTP or password at 4 lakh hotspots spread across the country. Telecom Regulator (TRAI) has issued its consultation paper and invited suggestions from the people.

Standards like ‘Wi-Fi Protected Access 3’ will be implemented to make public Wi-Fi secure. This will provide additional security cover for secure UPI and digital payments even in crowded areas.

According to the paper, the existing Wi-Fi system did not work because it did not meet the user needs. Also the operator did not earn any money.

6 important questions related to advanced public Wi-Fi system

  1. Will the service be free? This network will be free for basic use. However, for those who want high-speed internet, there will be an option for ‘Paid Wi-Fi’ with small recharge vouchers.
  2. How will it be beneficial- There is a lot of pressure on mobile networks in areas like stations/markets, due to which payments get stuck. Public Wi-Fi will handle this traffic, resulting in better internet speeds.
  3. What about operators? In the new model, companies will be able to earn by showing advertisements or through data analytics. The government will also provide them financial assistance so that they do not have to suffer losses.
  4. What is the role of data analytics in this? Companies will know where, what kind of advertisements to show and where people want faster internet by spending money.
  5. Will private-government companies work together? Yes, there will be joint use of Bharat Net (government) and private fiber lines, so that the network can be laid rapidly.
  6. Why is this important for Digital India? Mobile networks alone cannot handle the increasing data demand. Strong Wi-Fi is necessary to provide services like education, online treatment to everyone.

Cheap internet will strengthen digital infrastructure

According to former BSNL Chairman Arun Srivastava, it not only improves the quality of connectivity, but also strengthens the digital infra by providing affordable internet, especially for those who cannot afford expensive data plans.

He said Wi-Fi provides a better option for high-data usage such as video, cloud and AI based services. It is also necessary to access services like e-governance.
