Jamia Millia Islamia has directed students to avoid unofficial class groups on social media platforms and has mandated that a designated faculty member be included in the official class group of every class or batch.
Under the arrangement, the class representative will manage the official group as an administrator, while the faculty member nominated by the university will monitor the content shared in the group. Deans, heads of departments and centre directors have been asked to ensure that academic information reaches students only through these official groups.
The university reiterated the policy in a notice issued on Monday. The directive was originally introduced on September 15, 2025, amid concerns over the use of unofficial student-run class groups for purposes beyond academic communication.
According to the university, unofficial class groups created by students on social media platforms have been a source of controversy in several instances. Jamia has said that such groups have sometimes been used for discussions unrelated to academics and that objectionable or obscene content has also been shared in some cases.
The university has therefore stressed that academic information should be communicated through official class groups and that these groups should primarily be used for studies and other academic activities.
Under the system, each official class group will have a student class representative as its administrator as well as a faculty member nominated by the university.
The faculty member will be responsible for monitoring the content posted in the group and ensuring that only relevant academic information is shared. The faculty presence is also intended to prevent the circulation of objectionable, obscene or indecent material.
The arrangement effectively gives the official class group a formal role as a channel for academic communication between the university and students.

However, the university’s latest notice does not link the class-group directive to the protests. Instead, it reiterates the existing policy on official and unofficial class groups that was introduced in September 2025.
