Pune’s dairy federation has raised the price it pays farmers by Re 1/litre ahead of Ganeshotsav — but retail rates for consumers stay unchanged. Here’s the full explainer.

Milk Price: Festival season typically drives higher demand for milk and dairy products, and farmers have been pressing for better returns as input costs climb. (Representative image)
The Pune District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation has increased the purchase price of both cow and buffalo milk by Re 1 per litre, offering relief to dairy farmers just ahead of Ganeshotsav. The revised rate takes effect from tomorrow, meaning farmers selling milk at district cooperative centres will now earn one rupee more per litre than before.
The federation attributed the hike to rising costs of cattle fodder, animal feed and transportation, expenses that have squeezed farmer margins in recent months. Importantly, the federation clarified that the increase applies only to the price paid to farmers — retail milk prices for consumers remain unchanged, with no corresponding hike passed on to buyers.
Why Was The Purchase Price Raised Now?
The timing, just before Ganeshotsav, is significant. Festival season typically drives higher demand for milk and dairy products, and farmers have been pressing for better returns as input costs climb. The federation’s decision is aimed at cushioning that cost burden without disturbing retail rates in the immediate term.
