Indian Railways has clarified that there will be no extra charge for those passengers who have booked tickets before December 26, even if they travel after this date. On December 21, the Railways had announced an increase in fares for long distance journeys from December 26.
Speaking to the media, Railway Board Executive Director (I&P) Dilip Kumar gave this information. He said, increased fare will be charged on tickets made at train or station during TTE journey on or after December 26.
The increased fare comes into effect from tomorrow
The increased fare is coming into effect from tomorrow. Passengers traveling more than 215 kilometers will now have to pay extra 1 to 2 paise for every kilometer.
Railways estimates that this change will earn it an additional income of Rs 600 crore annually. However, there has been no change in the fares for those traveling a distance of less than 215 kilometers and monthly season ticket holders.

Relief for short route and season ticket holders
Railways has given relief to crores of passengers traveling on short routes. There has been no increase in fares for journeys less than 215 kilometres. This means that short distance travel will remain as affordable as before.
Apart from this, there is news of relief for the passengers traveling daily. Railways has not made any change in the prices of sub-urban trains and Monthly Season Tickets (MST). This will not put any burden on lakhs of passengers traveling by local trains in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
Why did Railways need to increase fares?
According to Railway Ministry sources, this fare increase is necessary to fund the increasing operational cost and infrastructure development projects. Railways is constantly working on improving its services, running new trains and modernizing stations.
The additional income of Rs 600 crore received from this fare increase will be used for these purposes. It is the second largest employer in the country and it costs heavily to maintain its network.
Rent increased for the second time in a year
Earlier on July 1 this year, the government had increased the rail fares. Then the fare of non-AC mail/express trains was increased by 1 paise per kilometer and the fare of AC class was increased by 2 paise per kilometer. Earlier in 2020, the passenger fare was increased.
