Star Brazil forward Neymar was on Monday named in the 55-man pre-squad a month before the FIFA World Cup by the head coach Carlo Ancelotti, providing the star footballer with a massive boost after being out of the reckoning for months.
The selection marks Neymar’s first significant move back into the national team fold after months of rehab from the ACL injury that kept him out of action for almost a year.
Neymar had missed out on Brazil’s recent team announcements amidst lingering concerns over his fitness and lack of match sharpness after his lengthy injury absence.
But after a promising comeback with Santos FC, Neymar has thrust himself back into contention for what could be the fourth FIFA World Cup appearance of his career.
Ancelotti had stated that only footballers in peak physical shape and competitive rhythm would earn selection, but Neymar’s recent performances for Santos seem to have altered that equation.
Since returning to Brazilian football, Neymar has scored five goals and provided three assists in 12 appearances, re-establishing himself as one of Santos’ most influential footballers.
Neymar’s resurgence has also played a key role in helping the club bounce back from a tough spell in the Brasileiro and the Copa Sudamericana.
Neymar played a starring role in Santos’ 2-0 victory over Red Bull Bragantino, finding the net in a result that snapped the club’s seven-game winless run. After drawing criticism from supporters earlier in the campaign, Neymar was even given a standing ovation when he was substituted during the match.
Reports suggest that Neymar’s potential return has boosted morale within the Brazil camp, with multiple footballers supporting his comeback. Raphinha also admitted that he would be delighted to see Neymar leading Brazil once again.
While Neymar’s inclusion in the preliminary team has strengthened his chances, a place in Brazil’s final FIFA World Cup team is still far from certain.
